History of mysteries

Rafal Gralewski, a stated guide to the sanctuary in a colorful lecture entitled: “Calvary Mysteries in the Context of Theater History” presented the history of Calvary mysteries in the context of the historical development of the theater. Those gathered were able to learn about the great theater of the 400 hectares, along with 42 chapels and churches, in which the pilgrim becomes an active participant in the great performance. It is worth mentioning that the original idea of Calvary creator Nicholas Zebrzydowski was a small replica of Jerusalem’s Way of the Cross, which was built according to the plans of Flemish architect and goldsmith Paul Baudarth (1580-1617) – this is how the 12 chapels of the Way of the Cross were originally built.

The project “Heritage of the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Sanctuary on the UNESCO Trail” is co-financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.
