Beginnings of existence

At the very beginning of the sanctuary’s existence, as early as in 1617, Mikołaj Zebrzydowski founded the town of Nowy Zebrzydów (in time it was renamed Kalwaria Zebrzydowska). The inhabitants provided meals and shelter for pilgrims coming to the sanctuary. The strong bond with the sacred zone has survived to this day, and the local community strongly identifies with the Kalwaria monastery.

The project “Heritage of the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Sanctuary on the UNESCO Trail” is co-financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.
