A day at the workshop

In the atelier of Krystyna Koziel (Sima Art company, Kraków), among the many works of restoration of sculptures and altars that are being carried out, we can find numerous paintings by master Jan Jerzyczek.

Jan Jerzyczek (1788-1842) was a permanent painter of the Calvary complex in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. His art was categorised as folk art, although the artist himself copied the works of the masters.

Using both modern techniques and the old methods of the masters, Mr Krystyn is restoring the legendary painter’s damaged works to their splendour.

The photographs show the use of ultraviolet illumination – which makes it possible to locate the painted layers of the painting and the course of the damage.

The project ‘Heritage of the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Sanctuary on the UNESCO Trail’ is co-financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.
