About the project

Heritage of the Sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska on the UNESCO trail.

The project is co-financed under the EEA Financial Mechanism for 2014-2021.

The EEA Grants manifest the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to creating a green, competitive and inclusive Europe.

As the guardians of the Sanctuary the Bernardines have been preserving the unique character of the place for over 400 years. Efficient heritage management has made it possible to maintain the complex, practically unchanged since the 17th century, and to maintain the continuity of tradition. The expected results of the planned activities under the Project are the improvement of the conditions for displaying and promoting the key elements of cultural heritage, increasing the availability of its infrastructure and facilitating the participation of society in culture.

The idea of developing the Sanctuary Heritage project in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska on the UNESCO trail results from the desire to preserve this extremely valuable pilgrimage site in the best condition for generations to come. The Kalwaria complex is not only a collection of buildings along the Passion and Marian paths. It is also a well-thought-out park and landscape composition. The paths planted with trees constitute park alleys and the views define the unique qualities of the composition. The church, monastery, the architectural and landscape composition of the Way of the Cross and the Paths of Our Lady are wonderful works of art, monuments as well as a vibrant center of worship. Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is an extraordinary place where natural conditions, the efforts of artists and founders create a unique religious and cultural atmosphere.

As part of the project eight chapels on the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Trail are set for renovation, as well three historic monastery  buildings will be renovated and their use will be changed for more educational and cultural purposes.
